Human society and its environment


This faculty has a tradition of excellence in teaching of Humanities to students at Eagle Vale High School and our students are consistently supported to achieve their personal best in the HSC. The Faculty offers a broad curriculum for students in Year 7 to 12.

The HSIE teaching staff are involved in many whole school activities such as: student welfare, environmental projects and a range of school social and cultural projects.

Overview of Course Content:

Junior School Courses

Geography:

The aim of Geography 7-10 program is to stimulate students’ enjoyment and interest in the interaction of the physical and human environments. Students achieve this as they develop geographic knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes and become informed and active citizens.

History:

The aim of the History syllabus is to stimulate students’ interest in and enjoyment of exploring the past, to develop a critical understanding of the past and its impact on the present, to develop the critical skills of historical inquiry and to enable students to participate as active, informed and responsible citizens

Elective Courses Yr 9-10

Commerce:

Commerce covers a range of topics that help students become informed and active citizens. Through practical activities students are able to enhance and develop their planning, organisational, communication and leadership skills.

Topics covered include:

Who wants to be a millionaire?: students learn how to make the most of their money and strategies for increasing their wealth. Students participate in the stock market game where they invest hypothetically in the search of making millionaires

Sharktank: Students learn all the theory of running a business, and then use this knowledge to run a small business within the school

Sellout: students investigate selling and promotional strategies and develop their own promotional campaign.

Elective History

The Elective History course is an opportunity for students to gain knowledge and understanding of a range of History periods. The units of study are linked to student and staff interest and include topics such as the people and events which caused change and continuity in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Topics covered include: Disasters in History, Voyage across the seas, You can’t stop the music and Heroes and Villians.

Elective Geography

Elective Geography allows both the teacher and the students to explore topics and themes that meet the interests of students. This course provides the opportunity for students to participate in numerous excursions.

Topics covered include:

The Deep Blue: importance of the worlds oceans and various issues associated with them.

LA to New York: how the natural and built environment changes in a straight line from L.A. to New York

G’Day Mate: investigation into one of Australia’s neighbours.

War and Peace: Investigate the nature and distribution of political tensions and conflict around the world and offer strategies for effective resolutions. 

Senior School Courses

Business Studies

The Preliminary course is based on a study of three compulsory topics (Nature of Business, Business Management, Business Planning) and the completion of a Business Research Task. The HSC Course is based on the study of four compulsory topics (Operations, Marketing, Finance and Human Resources).

Geography

In the preliminary course, students undertake study of two topic areas: Biophysical Interactions and Global Challenges. They also undertake a major Geography Project to complete their Year 11 assessment. In the HSC Course, students study three topics: Ecosystems at Risk, Urban Places and People and Economic Activity.

Legal Studies

Legal Studies develops students knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to the legal system and its effectiveness in promoting a just and fair society with a view to empowering students to participate effectively as citizens at the local, national and international level. Studies themes include Justice, Law and Society, Culture, Values and Ethics. IN the preliminary course, students study two broad topics of the basics of the legal system and the Individual and the State. They then perform a focus study. In the HSC course, students engage in the topics of Law and Society and a number of focus studies on crime (compulsory) and two other general themes in law.

Modern History

The study of Modern History engages students in an investigation of the forces that have shaped the world, based on the analysis and interpretation of sources. It offers students the opportunity to investigate the possible motivations and actions of individuals and groups, and how they have shaped the world politically, culturally, economically and socially. Modern History stimulates students’ curiosity and imagination, and enriches their appreciation of humanity by introducing them to a range of historical developments and experiences that have defined the modern world.

Topics covered include:

The investigation of historical sites and sources:- The nature of trench warfare in World War 1

Investigating Modern History – Case Studies The Decline and Fall of the Romanov Dynasty and the Making of Modern South Africa

Historical Investigation

Year 12

Core Study 1919-1946 (30 hours)

ONE National Study: Russia and the Soviet Union

ONE Peace and Conflict: Conflict in Europe

ONE Change in Modern World: Apartheid in South Africa 

Studies of Religion (1 unit)

Studies of Religion emphasises the development of skills of analysis, independent research, collaboration and effective communication. The Preliminary course looks at the Nature of Religion and Beliefs and includes two Religious Tradition studies. The HSC course looks at Religion and Belief Systems in Australia post 1945 and continues to look at different aspects of the Religious Traditions taught in the preliminary course.
